black girl, don’t get too black

The earth compresses underneath my feet, water rises

Soothing the skin baked by the June sun

Water droplets turn into memories on a back

Too brown to be black in the summer

Toes splash near the sand and eyes watch

Kids who are not as brown with hair

That falls down swim where the sun does

Not touch, water rises but not on me
